The Bottle House, New Holland Island

Public talk with Kirill Mikhanovsky and Alice Austen

In the 90s, after emigrating from Russia to the United States, director Kirill Mikhanovsky worked as an ambulance driver, just like the main character of Give Me Liberty, a member of the Russian community in Milwaukee. In this film, there is a lot of autobiography, and for various reasons, it was the most difficult in his career as a director.

At the meeting with the audience, Kirill Mikhanovsky and сo-scriptwriter Alice Austen will talk about how cinema grows from personal experience, how to build a universal statement by working with autobiographical material, how different film production systems in Russia and America are and how financial and other restrictions can be transformed into artistic reception. A separate point to be discussed, will be about working with non-professional actors and local communities, who played an important role in the creation of Give Me Liberty. At the end of the meeting, viewers will be able to give questions to the authors of the film and one of the main actors, Maxim Stoyanov.

Admission is free of charge. Public talk is delivered in Russian and English with сonsecutive translation. Attendees must register in advance (link in Russian). The partner of the event is the US Embassy in Russia.
