The Girl and the Spider

Ramon Zürcher, Silvan Zürcher
Watch
Lisa is moving to a new apartment. Her mother and neighbours help her to pack while removal men collect her furniture. This is a film shot almost entirely in interior spaces, shifting seamlessly from scenes of European neighbourliness to something akin to a horror film. Childhood traumas are suddenly voiced aloud in casual conversation, and the rush of memories and fantasies becomes muddled: who are these people to each other? Neighbours, lovers, rivals or even strangers? There is no space for dramatic ponderousness in this whirlwind relocation, the pace being set by a repetitive waltz motif and a melancholic 1980s pop hit. Tension bounces from one person’s gaze to another, from one remark to the next, until it manifests in the force of material impact: a scratch on a countertop, a broken glass and a bump on a forehead take the place of a conversation about the breakdown of a relationship. The Zürcher brothers are the recipients of the award for Best Director and the Prize of the FIPRESCI Jury in the Encounters section of the Berlinale.

Ramon Zürcher was born in 1982, studied at Bern University of the Arts and the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB) from 2006–2014. His graduation film, The Strange Little Cat, directed by Ramon and his brother Silvan, premiered at the Berlinale Forum in 2013 and was shown at numerous festivals, including Toronto, Cannes and the Viennale, receiving many awards.
