The international jury, which was judging the competition remotely, selected the winners of the first New Holland Island International Debut Film Festival.
The Main Competition Grand Prix (€15 000) was awarded to The Cloud in Her Room by Zheng Lu Xinyuan (Hong Kong, China) “for masterly framed images of an unexpected angle of Guangzhou”.
Blanco en blanco by Théo Court (Spain, Chile, France, Germany) received the Jury Award (€10 000) “for a stark and uncompromising view on a brutal piece of history”.
The selection of the Jury Award winner was not unanimous.
Members of the Main Competition Jury have also decided to give Special Mention to Oroslan with the following statement: “The memory of someone who passed away circulating, within a community, as a thin and discreet thread, becomes the motif for a beautiful portrait of human fragility and its poetic force”.
This year's Main Competition jury included directors Philip Gröning (Germany), Bakur Bakuradze (Russia) and Isabella Eklöf (Sweden), film producer Thanassis Karathanos (Germany), director of the Sheffield Doc/Fest festival Cíntia Gil (Portugal).
In Short Film Competition, three equal prizes of €5 000 were awarded to directors of How to Disappear (Total Refusal collective: Robin Klengel, Leonhard Müllner, Michael Stumpf, Austria), Community Gardens (Vytautas Katkus, Lithuania) and Still Working (Julietta Korbel, Switzerland). Perdikaki (Catriona Gallagher, Greece, UK) received Special Mention from the jury.
The Short Film Competition was judged by film director Andrés Duque (Spain), film critic Carmen Gray (Germany), video artist Polina Kanis (Russia) and theater director Dmitry Volkostrelov (Russia).
