Detours

Ekaterina Selenkina
Best Russian film of the festival. The formal protagonist of Ekaterina Selenkina’s feature-length debut is a young man named Denis who lives on the outskirts of Moscow and makes a living stashing drugs for sale on the dark web. Denis is always hiding – from the police, passers-by or his mother – and the camera loses sight of him from time to time, plunging into a meditative observation of anonymous courtyards, garages and forest parks. This dispassionate study of the choreography of bodies in the urban landscape, which seems to exist apart from its inhabitants, recalls the poetics of Chantal Akerman and slow cinema.

Born in 1992. She studied at the Moscow School of New Cinema and received a master’s degree in fine arts from the California Institute of the Arts. Selenkina curated the educational programme at the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art and is a member of the Bahía Colectiva. Detours, her debut feature film, was shown at the Venice International Film Critics' Week. She lives and works in Moscow.
