The words of the film’s title are taken from common responses to awkward questions asked by social workers at pregnancy crisis centres. Some things are difficult to speak openly about, especially if you’re 17. The main characters of Eliza Hittman’s are two teenage girls, one of whom is pregnant, who go to New York to seek an abortion. In their native Pennsylvania, parental consent is required for the termination of a pregnancy. This social drama, which may seem predictable at first glance, won a special jury prize for neorealism at the Sundance Film Festival. It also received the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale, as well as wide acclaim from international press.

The success of Never Rarely Sometimes Always is not only due to the relevance of its subject matter or any feminist agenda. This is a subtle, sensitive and nuanced film, which manages to do something very rare indeed – speaking about difficult subjects in simple language and without becoming excessively sentimental. This is largely thanks to the performance of the lead, first-time actor Sidney Flanigan.

Eliza Hittman is an award-winning filmmaker, born and based in Brooklyn, NY. She received her MFA from the School of Film/Video at California Institute of the Arts. Her debut feature film It Felt Like Love premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where her second film, Beach Rats, also premiered and won the Directing Award in the Dramatic category. Her third film, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlinale and a special jury prize for neorealism at the Sundance Film Festival. She is the recipient of the Lincoln Center Emerging Artists Award, a 2018 Guggenheim Fellow, and currently Assistant Professor of Film/Video at the Pratt Institute.
