Up at Night / Nuit debout

Nelson Makengo
In Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, power cuts are a regular occurrence. People spend their nights literally extracting light from generators and cheap LED sticks. Darkness is punctuated by lights, as if intended for studies in chiaroscuro, but Nelson Makengo's split-screen compositions are inseparable from the hard social reality at its core.

Nelson Makengo graduated in Visual Communication at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Kinshasa, DR Congo. He has participated in photography masterclasses and documentary writing residencies in Kinshasa and Saint-Louis, Senegal, as well as a training course at the Ecole nationale supérieur des métiers de l'image et du son (La Fémis) in Paris. He produces documentary and experimental short films.
