Ayka

Sergey Dvortsevoy
A young woman who has arrived in a freezing Moscow in search of work is forced to leave her newborn child in the maternity ward. Very soon, however, her ability to come to terms with the separation will be tested.

The second fiction feature by celebrated documentary filmmaker Sergey Dvortsevoy was six years in the making. The premiere took place in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where the lead actor Samal Yeslyamova received the Best Actress award.

Graduated from the documentary filmmaking faculty of the High Courses for Scriptwriters and Film Directors in 1992, having studied under L. Gurevich and S. Zelikin. While studying there he shot the short film Paradise and his graduation film, Bread Day, which received several dozen top prizes at international film festivals. His work Tulpan won the Un Certain Regard prize at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2018 his film Ayka, which documents the life of Kyrgyz migrants in Moscow, was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
